Word Association Football

WORD ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

Intro – This is from the MP LP album, “Matching Tie and Handkerchief”, it is pure nonsense until you read it carefully and ignore the word association, then the real message that John Cleese is making becomes clear. A Wikipedia description of the album (Notable because it has “three (3) sides” follows the text of the sketch). Here’s a link to a translation of meaning & associated word references, if you wish to cheat on some of the words and why they are associated. Don’t be put off it was written by a Pastor (so, no naughtiness!)

Tonight's the night I shall be talking about flu the subject of word
association football. This is a technique out a living much used in the
practice makes perfect of psychoanalysister and brother and one that has
occupied piper the majority rule of my attention squad by the right number one
two three four the last five years to the memory. It is quite remarkable baker
charlie how much the miller's son this so-called while you were out word
association immigrants' problems influences the manner from heaven in which we

And the really well that is surprising partner in crime is that a Lot and his wife
of the lions' feeding time we may be c d e effectively quite unaware of the
fact or fiction section of the Watford Public Library that we are even doing it
is a far, far better thing that I do now then, now then, what's going onward

So on the button, my contention causing all the headaches, is that unless
we take into account of Monte Cristo in our thinking George the Fifth
this phenomenon the other hand we shall not be able satisFact or Fiction section of the Watford Public Library againily to understand to attention when I'm talking to you and stop laughing, about human nature, man's psychological make-up some story the wife'll believe and hence the very meaning of life itselfish bastard, I’ll kick him in the balls down the road.

(BTW – some knowledge of LP Records is required in order to pass this portal. 3 to 5 questions will be asked of you about them at the conclusion of this article.)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Monty Python Matching Tie and Handkerchief is the fourth album by the comedy group Monty Python, released in 1973. The full title of the album is Free Record Given Away With The Monty Python Matching Tie and Handkerchief, and the initial pressings were allegedly packaged with a real tie and handkerchief and distributed to menswear stores, the concept being that the record was merely a 'free gift' in the manner of plastic dinosaurs with breakfast cereals.
It is particularly notable for the fact that the original release on Charisma Records had two parallel grooves on side two, so that different material would be played depending on where the stylus was put down on the record's surface. For this reason it is sometimes referred to as a "three-sided" record. The cutting was carried out by George "Porky" Peckham. To further confuse the listener, both sides of the LP are labelled "Side 2" - only the matrix numbers (CAS1080A and CAS1080B) identify which are the first and second sides.

More Commentary
This skit is similar to the British comedy tradition of “Spoonerism”. If this appeals to you, check out “Capitol Steps” who have skits called “Lirty Dies”, in spoonerism fashion. You can find them at http://www.capsteps.com.
Spoonerism - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - A spoonerism is a play on words in which corresponding consonants, vowels, or morphemes are switched (see metathesis). It is named after the Reverend William Archibald Spooner (1844–1930), Warden of New College, Oxford, who was notoriously prone to this tendency.
While spoonerisms are commonly heard as slips of the tongue (sometimes spoonerised as tips of the slung), they are considered a form of pun when used purposely as a play on words.
The Philosopher, Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein, was born in 1889. He was mentioned in “The Philosopher’s Song” (And Wittgenstein was a drunken swine who was just as schloshed as Hegel). He promoted the philosophy of language; “A truth-oriented philosopher of language might wonder whether or not a meaningless sentence can be true or false; whether or not sentences can express propositions about things that don't exist; and whether or not it is a sentence that is true or false, rather than the way sentences are used.” This philosophy applies to a great many skits.
(BTW, did I previously mention that his students dressed like him, and called each other “Witt”, as they tried to idolize him and his teachings? Now think of the “Bruces Sketch”, this is a parody of the great “Witt”, so to make a pun’)
Finally (and thankfully I am sure). What do Lewis Carroll and Don McLean have in common? Ans. – A poem and a song that are both non-sensical and yet you can picture what they are describing. Lewis Carroll wrote “Jabberwocky” for “Through the Looking Glass”. Don McLean wrote the song “On the Amazon” for his album
Both are compared by a professor for his college students in “Denotative & Connotative Language: Expressions. The question he raised was – “Must language be literal to carry meaning? If a word is not real—does not have an agreed-upon dictionary meaning—can it mean anything? Where does meaning reside?”
