cant anything be done about these pests called spammers?

normaly, I really like it in here. I have made nice friends and had interesting talks. this is one of the 2 comunitys Im logged in to every day.
but these SPAMMERS! it has been quiet for a while now, but today a spammer of links to what I assume was porn showed up. PORN! and yes, I know python is like porn for most of us haha, but Im talking real porn. in here! I will shout out the username so all of you as well can let him/her know that isent welcome in here. the username is nogush.

I have to say I agree with a opinion Ive heard before, why not do so every new member have to answer 3-5 python-related questions. lets say we create about 100 questions, both multiple choise and answers you have to type yourself and then 3 or 5 of them show up at random for every new person who register, that way its never the same questions every time.
that should make the spammers give up, but we could have a explination over the questions on why they are there, no self-respecting python-fan would not be slowed down by that.

so this is a pleeding for whoever runs this site. I know it must be a hell of a pain in the ass to have to delete all of that shit, and I dont know anything on how to build websites/comunitys, but I dont think it should be so hard to do this, should it?

GloriaTheWarrior: I like the idea of a quiz test thingy but , many python fans are really really new and dont know every python me
how about just to quote some things or the statement why you want to be here is a cool idea..or maybe both things together and then the community have to decide if welcome or not! ..:)

Mousebender: Might be a bit simplistic but can't the html be disabled in posts. Then there would be no point in anyone trying to spam because links wouldn't work. There would just be annoying ads on the site for a while.

also couldn't this site's access code prevent spam by blocking access to requests which don't originate from this domain.

Using a CAPTCHA to get round spambots is annoying for regular users but there are plenty of articles about blocking spam using other methods.

Hanri at 1:58 pm September 28

CAPTCHA is on it's way to the site. :)

YAY! :)

Hanri: because they're gonna fix the whole site in time. In the somewhat nearby future. Really.

It's not as bad as it used to be, in my humble opinion. *touch wood* Though I KNOW it's bad.

ah ok. well, I havent been a member for so long yet, just a few months. but they just destroy the otherwise so good mood in here, witch I think is a real drag and a big insult to our beloved pythons.

I must have been lucky, then, although I am new. I haven't noticed any spam - but then perhaps I'm not clicking on it - or could it be my firewall stops it ? Mrs Flopsy has twied to expwain it to me but I still don't weally understand. My expewience so far has all been of one hell of a fun site. Is there anywhere on the site which shows us newbies what to look out for ? and ... Who has to clear all the spam ?

the_thina at 11:52 am September 22

nono, since they post the spam as replys to other pepoles messages your firewall cant do anything. what you can do yourself if you see any is to not click at the links. sometimes they get money for everytime someone clicks in on the site, or maybe most times even, why would they otherwise do it. *sighs*
its hanri and gna42 that clears out the spam and report the spammers so they can be deleted from this site. so if you do see anything, drop a mail to any of them.

and how to regognize spam you ask. well, it could eiter look like a serious message (but when you begin to read it has hardly anything to do with the original message that its a reply to) with text and then links (that appears in fatter and blacker letters than the rest) or its just one long list of links and nothing else. another thing that is usual is that the same person has posted the same message in as meny threads/bogs/whatever as is possible.
I am always suspicious when I see a message with links as I described them above, and never click on any of the links.

Lancaster Bomber at 4:09 am September 24

Aaaaah. Much clearer, now. Many thanks for that.

Attached is one of my favourite short films - hope you like it (if you haven't seen it already)

the_thina at 4:31 am September 24

no problem. :)

haha, naaaw, what a cutie! :) I like anything with cute and funny cats, they are my favourite animal and I love them :)
check out mean kitty on youtube, that channel has given me meny laughs.

BroMaynardG: It's been suggested, but the power that is "NMBC - New Media Broadcasting Company" has not gone for it.

It is a shame that we have to endure reading SPAM for washing Powder or Turkish Taffy, but notice - - - it magically vanishes w/in 24 hours!

One thing to consider - What if a person who just fell in love/like with the Pythons, tried to join, but they had only seen one movie. They might not know about coconut and swallows, or about Pepperpots, or even that Blind Pew 'ad acute 'earing! Would you deny them access to this wonderful Shipshape site just because they did not know the diff' between 3 and 5?

yeah I know, but it dont have to be hard questions. like if one question was "who was the american member?" that would take like 4 minutes on wiki to get right, but the spammers maybe would not bother at all.

and I agree, the ones running this site does do a good work when it comes to deleting spam, but it would mean less work and more play for them if something like this was done. we all know that all work and no play makes jack a dull boy.

LemonCurry95 at 9:36 am September 22

If we all just tried our best to make it clear that Spam is NOT welcome here, it would put people off. Maybe we could ask for something to be put on the homepage that is really clear to everybody that the only Spam we like is the tinned stuff. It's sort of like peer pressure-if enough people make it clear that they don't want it on the site, people wouldn't bother, because they wouldn't want to face the wrath of hundreds of Python fans!

I've just spent four hours burying the cat!
Four hours to bury the cat?
Yes, it wouldn't keep still.

the_thina at 11:38 am September 22

unfortonatly I dont think that is enough. I dont think they give a flying shit about us or if we like them or not. if they did care about anyone other than themselfs they would not do it.

mrsCutout at 12:30 pm September 22

I agree with your idea about the questions.I meaneven if someone has seen just one film definately they would have done some research about it, i know i always do if i like a film. And you don't just register in a site before learning a little something for those tha it is about..if you understand what i'm saying! I do not have any spammers problems so far but i would'n like get one in the future!

the_thina at 12:42 pm September 22

yeah, thats my point. I think that if say a 14 year old just saw life of brian for example. I think that to find pythonline some google is needed, and if they even are on the internet googeling python it cant be that hard to go to wiki and take a look there. or youtube to watch clips to get quotes (if there will be any in the questions) right.
as I said, it dont have to be hard questions.

mrsCutout at 1:10 pm September 22

Yeah i see!I mean the questions would be difficult just for those who have no idea at all about python and just care pissing people off!I discovered pytholine 2 years ago but it took me ages to find out that this site existed!I had to watch many interviews.. and by the way pythonline is realy improved!!!!

the_thina at 1:44 pm September 22

yeah, exactly! I heard about pythonline 10 years ago, but as I understood it from that interwiev it was just a ordinary page about python back then, and never rememberd to take a closer look. then I found it by accident a few months ago when I was searching via google to find a pic with all 6 of them in it, and happy I did. :)
