The Missionary?

So what does everyone think of Michael's movie The Missionary? I just saw it for the first time today and am a bit baffled.

arkennedy: Have you seen this video?

It's outtakes from The Missionary, someone else posted it on this site before but I don't remember who it was or where to find it on this site.

That would have been our lovely Kisch who posted this on the last and seemingly better P-line.

arkennedy at 1:20 pm December 19

Well in that case I'm grateful to Kisch for posting it in the first place :)

kisch at 1:36 pm December 19

Aw, I was SO happy after watching this little gem that I just HAD to share it with everybody:)))
And it didn't really matter who posted it first, because EVERYBODY must see it. It's the essence of Michael Palin in my opinion !

arkennedy at 2:07 pm December 19

I'm very glad you did post it :) And when I read this thread it reminded me of the outtakes video and I decided it should be posted here as well. As you said "EVERYBODY must see it" :)

Lady April at 1:50 pm December 19

I think reposts are rather welcome! There are always new people to the board =)

the_thina: must admit Ive never heard of it before. *shame on me*
is it worth to add to the collection? well, it must be, mike is in it. ^^
will try to find it

thewastelandr at 1:40 pm December 18

It's definitely really interesting. You'll have to let me know what you think, because I'm still trying to sort it out in my own mind!

the_thina at 2:16 pm December 18

ok, will do! :)
are the ones his trying to save prostitues? thats the impression I get from the pic for some reason

thewastelandr at 9:22 pm December 18

Yes you're exactly right. He sets up a mission to help the prostitutes.

the_thina at 10:52 pm December 18

sounds interesting, I must say. its lovely to see the boys in more serious movies now and then

thewastelandr at 7:53 am December 19

It's very interesting, although strange! Yes, I agree - so nice to see the Pythons doing a variety of genres.

kisch at 8:03 am December 19

I wonder what did you find strange about it ?

thewastelandr at 8:07 am December 19

What I said a little bit farther down - I just didn't see the "moral of the story" if there was supposed to be one. I thought Michael's character was a pushover and it was sad what happened to him. I don't think he liked/loved Maggie's character, but she introduced him to something forbidden, so he was somewhat fascinated by her. I think that wouldn't be sustainable though. What do you think, Kisch?

Lady April at 12:57 pm December 19

as I said on page 2........

kisch at 8:20 am December 19

Well, I think there is no moral of the story whatsoever. Michael is not a moralist, I noticed, he's more of the observer usually. The story is somewhat a fantasy, and not probably really about the fact that he loved or didn't love Maggie's character, although I'm sure he was greatly fascinated by her.
I think it's also partly a comment on the gender roles at that time and now.
As Jeremy said earlier, it's more to this film that meets the eye.

thewastelandr at 11:05 am December 19

Yeah I would have to agree with you. I think I overanalyzed and was looking for some moral of the story as it does have a lot to say about the Church (or does it...). It was definitely interesting though and I'm glad I saw it - his character was a sad one.

kisch at 11:49 am December 19

I don't find his character sad funnily enough. He gained what I value most of all in life - he gained freedom !

jeremytoogood: I'd love to know what baffled you about this film-I must say, there is more going on than meets the eye in this film, but certain aspects can be a bit baffling unless you work to see how they fit in with the whole story.

Lady April at 4:40 pm December 16

Like Michael dear was really a Casanova who shared his hot bod with many a women? Oh I would LOVE that!

thewastelandr at 8:42 pm December 16

What baffled me was that I think I went into it looking for a "moral of the story" or what was the film trying to say? I thought maybe it was pointing out the hypocrisy of the clergy, or some other philosophical or religious revelation, but now I think perhaps I was over-analyzing.

The whole time I couldn't help but feeling bad for Michael's character, but at the same time he was slightly passive and not very authoritative. But it was so awful about Debra being left at the altar... even though she was not intelligent and very uninterested in the finer things of life.

Lady April at 9:42 am December 17

Yea, Michaels character was rather spineless pushover.

Lady April: He can give his body to meee! I think this movie is great =)

Tini at 2:05 pm December 16

Agreed. :D

kisch: I think it's wonderful film, I have watched it at least a dozen times and will get back to it again and again. I think the script is very good, the cast is superb, the acting is perfect (from everyone !) and it is very VERY enjoyable. The cinematography is spectacular, especially if you love England and English landscapes. The humour is gentle but I do laogh out loudly on the couple of occasions.
Well, as you can see, I am a fan:)
To some people this film can be boring. But it's typical Michael Palin outside Python and you either get it or not. People expecting ten laughs a minute will be disappointed.
But it does make you feel good.
After reading the whole story about this film in Michael's diaries, I started to appreciate it even more.
The tagline is awful (He gave his body to save their souls), but it was dictated by the distributors.

thewastelandr at 8:39 pm December 16

I agree - I loved the landscape, acting, etc. The humor was very subtle - what was funny was poor Michaels' facial expressions when all these women were taking advantage of him!
