viking gods stories

have been talking with quite a few of you in here about the amazing stories from nordic mythology, and how I have been searching for a book that is like a "bible" of the vikings, not just the facts but the stories and a few of you have told me you would like to read it too.

and now I have gotten a safe tip! Alf Henriksons ”Asken Yggdrasil” that is the sweish title, dont know if it has the same name around the globe, but now you have a name of the author, then if it is in fact translated to other languages its easier to track down.
I found a second hand copy online and it will probobly arrive in the mail tomorrow, and I cant wait!

Lady April: The hubband and I really dig the Norse myths. HE is especially in the Vikings. I on the otherhand am not too stoked about my Saxon background. I prefer to acknowledge my Anglo. Don't get me wrong though - long before the raping and pillaging it was very interesting shit for sure!

Holly: I'm glad you found the book, you'll have to translate some of it for us

I have gotten almost through the whole thing allready and Im lovin it so much!

mrsCutout: I think it is a very interesting mythology ..much like the greek one! I recently bought a book called "Ancient legents and myths" having the history of western and greek mythology and the connections etc! I love the lord of the rings taking so many elements!

The Ex-Leper at 9:00 pm April 22

yes I know! I love how detailed Tolkien got with the books all the history of Middle Earth the different cultures history and I love reading the Appendices that are at the back of he Return of the King book and I just love it all its so beautiful the entire world of it is

thewastelandr at 8:37 am April 23

YES!! Some of the best stories are in the appendices and in The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales!!

the_thina at 2:17 pm April 22

yeah, you know middle-earth in lord of the rings? that name is lifted directly from nordic mythology, the place called midgård, that was were the humans lived. (the gods lived in asgård)
and the book came today allready, and its absolutey wonderful! <3

thewastelandr at 3:14 pm April 22

Yes, it's true! Tolkien took a TON from Norse mythology, and Beowulf and such. <3 Tolkien!!

Holly at 8:12 pm April 22

I cried when I read the Hobbit

thewastelandr at 8:38 am April 23

Awww!! Yes, it's gorgeous. Some of my first memories are of my dad reading that book to my brother and I.

The Ex-Leper at 10:03 am April 23

thats amazing! I already decided I am going to read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings to my kids whenever I am a mom lol

thewastelandr at 11:12 am April 23

Good idea!!! It was a little scary at some parts (I remember being terrified of the goblins) but definitely great for kids! He also read Charlotte's Web, Lord of the Rings, and others to us.

The Ex-Leper at 12:29 pm April 23

yea I know I was introduced to Lord of the Rings when I was in third grade and I adored it so much lol

thewastelandr at 2:47 pm April 23

So wonderful!! I'm so glad you read them before the movies came out. It is better to read them first!

The Ex-Leper at 8:58 pm April 22

Lord of the Rings both the books and the movies are in all my favorite story in the entire world and I always cry at Return of the King whether it be book or movie and the movies I adore just as much as the books I am emotionally attached to that story the entire thing my car's name is Gandalf lol and I am so excited that they are coming back to do two part movie of The hobbit it is going to be amazing!!! :D

Holly at 6:23 am April 23

that's fantastic! I didn't know that

The Ex-Leper at 7:39 am April 23

yea but it wont be coming out until december of next year I believe :/

thewastelandr at 8:39 am April 23

It will be so interesting to see because The Hobbit is so much different than LOTR. The elves are so silly! Definitely less foreboding than LOTR. I wonder how they will treat it in the movie.

The Ex-Leper at 10:02 am April 23

yes well Peter Jackson is a producer and he really is brilliant at interpreting the books into movie form so hopefully they will do a spendid job

thewastelandr at 11:13 am April 23

Yess!!! But if I'm correct, he isn't writing them like he did LOTR, is he?

The Ex-Leper at 12:30 pm April 23

hmmm no he isn't the director this time but I am sure his influence will be seen throughout the movies no doubt and I have heard the director they got is good with fantasy epics so we shall see

thewastelandr at 2:47 pm April 23

I think so too. I think the guy who is director did some really awesome movies. Didn't he do Pan's Labyrinth?? I can't remember for sure... should google it.

The Ex-Leper at 2:46 pm April 30

yea he did do Pan's Labrynth actually that is where I read he worked and that is why they thought he would be good for The Hobbit

the_thina at 3:28 pm April 22

yeah that has gotten me thinking... what nationality was tolkien?

mrsCutout at 12:09 am April 23

I think he lived in new zealand for a while

thewastelandr at 2:48 pm April 23

Don't think so... the movies were filmed in NZ. Maybe that is what you are thinking of?

thewastelandr at 3:47 pm April 22

Very, very British... lol. He and C.S. Lewis are by far my favorite authors.

the_thina at 3:52 pm April 22

ooooh, narnia! <3
think it was you and me talking about it before, but you should really read two of astrid lindgrens books. ronja robbersdaughter and brothers lionheart I think the english titels is. you would LOVE them. and the movies are good too!

The Ex-Leper at 8:56 pm April 22

I just finished reading the Narnia series for the first time a few weeks ago and I loooved it!!

thewastelandr at 7:10 pm April 22

Yes, you told me. :) I adore Chronicles of Narnia. When I was in high school, I was the White Witch in a play, lol. Will never stop loving those books. He also wrote many other good ones. You should read Till We Have Faces if you get a chance. AMAZING... and his apologetics changed my life. Oh and definitely read Screwtape Letters!

the_thina at 7:19 pm April 22

yeah, it was narnia that made me think of bröderna lejonhjärta... a clip from the movie, you can get the basic idea... that dragon was made of carbord btw. haha!

thewastelandr at 3:47 pm April 22

And they were friends!

arkennedy at 3:31 pm April 22

I think he was British (English to be exact).

the_thina at 3:38 pm April 22

aah, that would explain it, they had the same gods as us here in scandinavia at the time

the_thina at 3:39 pm April 22

(not the time when he wrote the books, but back then when the vikings were at it I ment)
